Travis County Civil & Family Courts Facility

Austin, Texas

Having outgrown its previous space, Travis County formed a partnership to construct a new Civil and Family Court Facility to better serve its constituents. It will replace the current facility that was built in 1931. The new building includes the following:

  • State-of-the-art Law Library and Self-Help Center
  • Gathering spaces for attorney-client conferences
  • Short-term child drop-off center for those using the courts
  • Dedicated, appropriate spaces for child testimony
  • 4-level underground parking garage
  • Secured judicial access and circulation
  • Separate and secured entrance for persons in custody
  • Separate and secured holding and circulation area for persons in custody
  • “Great Streets” concept, which focuses on walkability and public engagement and includes 18-foot sidewalks, tree plantings, benches, and bike racks

A few potential project challenges for Dynamic Systems, Inc. included: a self-contained chiller plant, downtown construction and a small site footprint, and construction never halted during the COVID-19 pandemic. DSI was able to adapt and overcome any challenges and there were no site cases or outbreaks reported.

The sustainable design by Gensler aims for LEED Silver certification.
